Pharmacognosy is probably the oldest of the modern sciences that involves the study of crude drugs having their origin in the plant and animal kingdom. Pharmacognosy deals with the knowledge of history, distribution, cultivation, collection, selection, preparation, identification, evaluation, preservation and use of drugs and economic substances that affects the health of human and other animals. During the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, “Pharmacognosy” was defined as a branch of medicine or commodity sciences dealing with drugs in their crude or unprepared form.
The Department of Pharmacognosy focuses on the antique standpoint of traditional acquaintance by integrating it with contemporary science. This department focuses on research in the field of discovery and development of herbal drugs, phytopharmaceuticals, microbial products, quality control and analysis of principal components, etc. The academic credibility of this department is envisaged by its changing curriculum to meet the current requirements of the Herbal Pharmaceutical Industry.
Department of Pharmacognosy is well-equipped with sophisticated facilities and infrastructure that includes state-of-art laboratories with all the facilities for isolation, characterization and estimation of Phyto-constituents using Microscope with a stage micrometre, Digital pH meter, Camera Lucida, Digital Balance, Incinerator, Micro Centrifuge, Projection Microscope, Soxhlet apparatus, etc. It also provides knowledge of more than 250 crude drugs, 100 charts, 200 herbarium specimens, and a herbal garden with nearly 100 medicinal plants.
The experience and knowledge of the faculties of the Department of Pharmacognosy enable the students to receive excellent theoretical and practical training necessary to become a promising pharmacist. The professional curriculum includes general, scientific, and herbal oriented content that prepares Pharmacy graduates to deliver effective and cost-efficient pharmaceutical care.
